Genesis Four

"In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor."
---Genesis 4:3-5

What is the issue here? Both brought offerings. Both were fruits of their labors. Both were designated to God.

The issue here is not the fact that they gave an offering, the issue is that Abel brought the best and Cain appears to have given leftovers. This is an important principle to understand as we desire to please God with our lives.

Because God wants to be first in our lives, we must treat Him as such. We must not give Him leftovers as we tell Him that He is Holy. This applies in all areas of our lives. Not just finances (though living in financial obedience is very important), but in our efforts in family, work and service.

What if each day, the first hour you worked you dedicated it as an offering to God. I would imagine that if this happened, you would find the first hour of each day to be the most productive of all your hours.

"Father, help us give you our very best today."
